The Story: (October 2017) New Kensington, Pa. – New Kensington Assistant Fire Chief Ed Saliba Jr. said a state police fire marshal was on scene Thursday morning after fire destroyed a 2 1/2 story residence along Freeport Street Wednesday afternoon.
5 people were left homeless after the fire appeared to have started in the kitchen area of the home and spread quickly throughout the rest of the structure. Asst. Chief Saliba praised the 50- some firefighters for their quick response and hard work to combat the fire. Fire crews had to back out of the structure at least one time due to intense heat. Exposure to a house next door was within 3′ of the burning structure and sustained minimal damages.
New Kensington companies 2 & 1 initially responded to the fire and a short time later the fire was upgraded to a working house fire. Chief Saliba said there crews from the city of Arnold and Lower Burrell assisting at the scene. New Kensington EMS was the first on scene reporting no injuries to any occupants inside the structure.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The fire broke out at 5:46 pm. The house is estimated to be roughly 70-80 years old.
